About three years ago like many others I found myself looking for job, one of the things that frustrated me the most it the time that took me to find a job I would like to call it as the job search lead time. I had countless interview with agents (recruiters) most of them where of no use and it took me a whole seven months to land on a job. Later on I did and extensive research to see a better way to manage the lead time and found that job.

Job search lead time can vary widely, lasting for as little as a week to as long as two years or more. Because of this, it is very difficult to predict just how long it will take job seekers to find the jobs they want. I feel knowing how long it will take to find a job can help us to plan better just like knowing the time it will take to sell your home.

Literally hundreds of other factors make lead time one of the biggest unknown quantities of a career change. With the economy in its current state, there are job seekers of high quality that are trapped in a situation where the job search lead time can be long.

When I was planning to change my job last year I decided to know my lead time before putting my resume out. With that in mind I contacted all my friends who have changed their jobs in last one year to see the time it took them to get that job. I compiled a database for the same and dissected the data to find that it will take me at least six months to get a job. During that exercise I have learned that by getting a certification in my current skill I can cut down the job search time by at least two months and a better pay.

Sure enough I was able to land to my current job in less than three months. Later on when my friends where looking for a job they started to ask me for the time it took me to get a job and for some tips I used to get the job. It is also a good idea to use one valid email address for all your applications. Make sure it is a working email address, not one that is full or one that bounces a lot of your email into your spam folder. You may also want to sign up for regular email alerts on jobs. These can be found at many job sites. You just mark what types of jobs that interest you by type or location and a notice is sent to your email box once a job marked with that description is displayed.

Online job searching can be an exhausting endeavor. But by following these simple online search tips, it may be a little easier and in the end you could find out that it was a rewarding endeavor. Just remember as in any job search it can take time, patience and dedication on your part. But once you find that perfect job, it is well worth it.

Step 5- Be Persistent And Follow Up

Once you are making contacts and sending out resumes, you must be determined to follow up. Just sending out a resume and hoping for an interview won’t get you hired faster than your competition. Have a consistent habit of following up with decision makers after a couple of days have passed. You are NOT being pushy by doing this, you are being persistent


As you can see, this is not rocket science, but it really does work. Tapping into the hidden job market will put you ahead of ninety-five percent of your job search competitors. Don’t ever hesitate to make direct contact with employers. Employers like to use the hidden job market because it is much cheaper and faster to fill jobs this way.
